Self-care as a means to de-stress

Every single one of us will experience some degree of stress during our lifetime. It’s part of the human experience. 

We work too much.
We’re too hard on ourselves.
We’re constantly plugged in + online.
We worry about our families, our finances + our jobs.
We face challenges + struggles each + every day.

But whilst it’s completely normal to experience stress, long term exposure can be extremely detrimental to our emotional, physical + mental wellbeing.

This is where self-care comes into play.

What is self-care?

“The practice of taking an active role in protecting one’s own well-being + happiness, in particular during periods of stress.”

Self-care is the key to living a balanced life. It is a practice that doesn’t just happen, but needs to be actively thought about.

Knowing what self-care is not is key too. It is not something that we force ourselves to do, or something we don’t enjoy doing.

Self-care should not be thought of as a selfish act either. We must consider our own needs in order to be in a place where we can not only take care of ourselves, but others too.

Benefits of self-care

We become more resilient + are better able to handle life’s stresses when we are feeling our best – both physically + emotionally. By reducing our stress levels we can:

  • Improve our physical health
  • Better our emotional health
  • Strengthen our mental health
  • Become better friends + caregivers to those around us

Different types of self-care

Self-care takes many different forms. From taking time out to meditate or  pampering yourself with a massage or hair treatment, to practicing the art of saying no + learning how to manage your time more effectively – self-care is completely personal to each + every person. Take time out to meditate

Through meditation you can achieve better focus + concentration, improved self-awareness + self-esteem, + lower levels of stress + anxiety. You can even incorporate crystals into your practice. Pamper yourself

Whether it’s a spa day, a long soak in the bath or just treating yourself to a glass of wine + settling down with a good book whilst wearing a face mask, even the smallest amount of pampering can go a long way. The relaxation you get from it can trigger the relaxation response, which can prevent chronic stress from damaging your health.

Take care of your body

Being mindful of how we treat our body is so important when it comes to self-care. The food we eat, how much exercise + sleep we get + even the products we use on ourselves are all small acts of self-care that we can practice every single day. These seemingly trivial things are actually really important aspects of self-care that can work to lower our stress levels long-term.

Self-care looks different for everyone

It’s important to form your own self-care strategy. Everyone will have their own idea of what self-care means to them + that’s fantastic. Whether it’s getting back to nature, slowing down or having a little indulgent treat now + then, the beautiful thing about self-care is that you are in control.
