Tips for dealing with greasy hair

We all produce oil through our scalp + in fact our natural oils play a vital role in keeping our hair shiny + our scalp healthy. However, there is sometimes too much of a good thing + if you have an excessively oily scalp + overly greasy hair, it can lead to uncomfortable itching + a lack of self-confidence.

If this sounds like you, first of all you’re not alone, + second of all, there are a few things you can try to reduce the grease without damaging your hair or causing more irritation to your scalp… Wash your hair more, or less…

Okay, this doesn’t sound very helpful - but hear us out. People with oily hair should wash their hair regularly to help remove excess oil from the scalp + hair. However, if you already wash your hair pretty regularly, for example once a day, + you’re still experiencing excess oil, you may be over-washing. Over-washing can strip your hair of its natural oils + can cause your scalp to go into overdrive; producing more oil to compensate. The key here is to find the right balance for you.

Make sure you wash properly

It might sound silly because it’s something you do so often, but many people don’t actually wash their hair properly. You know when you go to the hairdressers + your scalp feels revitalised + your hair so fresh + bouncy, that, amongst other things, is a sign of a good wash! When shampooing your hair, make sure you really work it into the scalp. Concentrate your efforts here + give a thorough clean - just don’t aggressively scrub too much because you can irritate your scalp.

Condition the ends of the hair

Piling on the conditioner can add a greasy look to your hair, especially if you don’t rinse it out properly. Only add conditioner to the lengths + ends of your hair + make sure you give it a thorough rinse before you leave the shower.

Clean your hair accessories

When’s the last time you washed your brush? Many of us neglect to properly clean our at-home products. But a dirty brush has no business touching freshly washed hair! By regularly cleaning your brush you rid it of any product build up + by pulling out trapped hair you ensure it’s free of any dirt or bacteria. If you use things like grips or clips these should also be washed.

Go silicone-free

Many shampoos, conditioners, treatments + styling products are made with silicone that helps to smooth hair + add shine. But if you have naturally oily hair it’s going to make it worse as silicones build up in the hair + on the scalp weighing it down + making it greasy. Silicones also prevent much needed moisture from getting into the hair shafts + this dryness can make your scalp go into overdrive again, producing more oil than necessary. Our natural + chemical free shampoo + conditioner is free from silicones + could be just the thing you need to get your greasy hair under control.

You can read more about silicones + how they affect your hair + the environment, in our blog here.
